WORCESTER — Worcester has named 24 businesses to the inaugural class of its Legacy Business program, recognizing long-standing local establishments that city officials said have helped define the city’s neighborhoods and economy.

City Manager Eric Batista announced the selections Thursday. The businesses were chosen from 309 nominations covering 62 eligible businesses, according to the city.

The inaugural honorees are Sneakerama, Addie Lee's Soul Food, Maria's Kitchen, Jo Ann Warren Studio, Moynagh's Tavern Inc., Boulevard Diner, Ralphs Chadwick Square Diner, Kenmore Diner, Central Shoe Repair, Da-Lat Restaurant, True Value Hardware, Bonardi's Formalwear, Parkway Diner, Carlitos Barbershop, That’s Entertainment, Ed Hyder's Mediterranean Marketplace, George's Coney Island, CC Lowell, Jerrys Tastee Freeze, Enchanted Fireside, Dodge Park Rest Home, Lou Roc's Diner, Miss Worcester Diner and Marvin’s Corner Lunch.

“Each of these businesses are iconic establishments that represent the best of Worcester,” Batista said in a statement. “I want to congratulate all of them on their longevity and ingenuity, which has allowed them to stay in business for generations.”

The city said the selected businesses have been operating in Worcester for an average of 70 years. Many are intergenerational, family-operated businesses.

Nominations were scored in partnership with the Museum of Worcester, Preservation Worcester and the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce. The city plans to honor the businesses at an award ceremony later this summer.

5 of the selected businesses — Boulevard Diner, Ralph's Chadwick Square Diner, Kenmore Diner, Parkway Diner and Miss Worcester Diner — are Worcester Lunch Car Company-produced diners.

Eric Butler, executive director of the Museum of Worcester, said the businesses are part of the city’s history.

“It is impossible to talk about Worcester history without the recognition and mention of the businesses on this list,” Butler said.
