WORCESTER — Barry Krock, a prominent figure in the Central Massachusetts business and banking community, passed away on August 27th at the age of 90. Krock, known for his tenure as the president of Commerce Bank and Trust, was surrounded by family at the time of his death following a brief illness.
According to his obituary, Krock’s career in banking began with his appointment as president of Shrewsbury Bank and Trust in 1964 at just 31 years old, making him the youngest bank president in the nation at the time. He later became the longtime president of Commerce Bank and Trust, where he and the "Commerce Lion" became iconic symbols in Worcester.
Born and raised in Worcester, Krock, the son of the late Aaron Krock, founder of Commerce Bank & Trust Co., was a graduate of Worcester Academy and Boston University. He started his professional journey as an auctioneer, a passion that he continued to pursue throughout his life, traveling across the country with his wife, Janet, to auction fleets of planes, factories, and mills.
Krock was deeply committed to his community, lending support to various local organizations including The Jewish Home, Worcester Business Development, and the Worcester Science Center (EcoTarium). His genuine interest in people and his ability to connect with them made him a beloved figure on Worcester’s Main Street, where he was often seen engaging with residents and offering his sage advice.
Krock is survived by his wife, Janet Elizabeth (Lofgren) Krock, his daughter Kathryn Krock Parvin, son-in-law Kevin Parvin, grandchildren Harrison and Lily Parvin, and his son Aaron Andrew Krock, all of Worcester. He was laid to rest in a private ceremony, with funeral arrangements handled by Miles Funeral Home in Holden.
A public memorial will be held on September 4 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Beechwood Hotel in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Krock's honor to the Yeshiva at 22 Newton Ave, Worcester, MA 01610.
