In Loving Memory of Afua Adjeman (Auntie Mary)

  • Sunrise: August 11, 1945 – Sunset: June 27, 2025

It is with deep sorrow and eternal love that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished matriarch, Afua Adjeman, also known as Auntie Mary, who transitioned peacefully on June 27th, 2025 at the age of 79.

Born in the heart of Ghana, in the village of Krapa in the Ashanti Region, near the town of Ejisu, Afua was a woman of strength, wisdom, and grace. Her life was shaped by the rich traditions of her homeland and a deep sense of purpose that she carried with her across continents.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, her two brothers, her dear daughter, the late Akos, and other cherished family members. Though our hearts are heavy, we find solace in knowing she is now reunited with them.

Afua is survived by her devoted children: daughters Barbara (Nana Afia) Bonsu and Erica (Akua) Adjeman, and sons Kwame (Chief) Bonsu and Chris (Nana Kwame) Bonsu, who carry forward her legacy of resilience, warmth, and generosity. She was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and the doting great-grandmother of 3 great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved deeply and celebrated with joy.

Together with her late ex-husband, Joseph Boateng Adjeman, she was among the trailblazers and one of the first Ghanaians to settle in Worcester, Massachusetts. Their home became a haven for countless newly arrived Ghanaians, offering shelter, guidance, and a welcoming embrace. Afua played an instrumental role in building a vibrant Ghanaian community in Worcester, one rooted in unity, culture, and mutual support.

A woman of remarkable generosity, boundless spirit, and unwavering faith, Afua lived life to the fullest. Her deep and devoted faith in God was the foundation of her life. She was a fierce Christian who relied heavily on prayer, drawing strength, comfort, and guidance from her relationship with the Lord.

Her laughter was infectious, her wisdom was treasured, and her presence left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Above all, she adored her family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, each the light of her life and the heart of her joy.

Afua was a nurturer, a counselor, a storyteller, and a pillar of strength. Her home was filled with love, warmth, and the irresistible aromas of Ghanaian cooking. Her life was a testimony to perseverance, compassion, and the power of community.

Her passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but her spirit lives on in the lives she touched, the family she nurtured, and the community she helped build. We are better because she lived. We are stronger because she loved.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:23

May her soul rest in perfect peace.
