Shigley is the inaugural winner of the “Diamonds and Dollars” $5 instant ticket game, vows to split prize with brother as part of a three-decade-old pact

Jeffrey Shigley of Shrewsbury struck gold, emerging as the inaugural $1 million prize winner in the Mass. State Lottery's “Diamonds and Dollars” $5 instant ticket game.
At the Lottery’s Dorchester headquarters, Shigley, flanked by his sister-in-law Linda, declared that he would uphold a 30-year pact with his brother to divide any significant lottery winnings between them. He opted for a one-time payout, walking away with $650,000 before taxes.
The serendipitous windfall occurred at Star Liquors at 507 Boston Turnpike in Shrewsbury, where Shigley made an impromptu purchase. Star Liquors will receive a $10,000 bonus from the lottery.
Despite the life-altering amount, Shigley seemed poised and committed to sharing his newfound wealth, honoring a bond with his brother that transcends monetary gains.
