"Still so shocked!": Worcester woman wins $1M on scratch ticket

  • A Worcester woman who thought she had won $10,000 on a lottery ticket got the surprise of a lifetime when she learned the prize was actually $1 million.

Michelle Sloan claimed the top prize in the Massachusetts State Lottery’s “$2,000,000 Diamond Cashword” instant ticket game, officials announced Thursday. She opted for a one-time cash payment of $650,000 before taxes.

“I was positive it was only ten grand,” Sloan said in a statement. “I just can’t believe it. I’m still so shocked!”

She initially brought the ticket to the lottery’s regional office in Worcester, where she was informed she would need to visit the Dorchester headquarters to collect the full prize.

Sloan said she plans to use her winnings to invest and support her children.

The winning ticket was purchased at Village Knoll Variety, located at 107 West Main Street in Millbury. The store will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
