Startup airline Breeze Airways bypasses Worcester again

    Breeze to begin flying from its seventh New England airport

    Breeze Airways, a 3-year-old low-cost airline started by the founder of JetBlue, announced its expansion in New England. 

    The airline, which focuses on flying from smaller, secondary airports, said on Wednesday that in October it will begin flights from Portsmouth, N.H.

    Portsmouth will be Breeze's seventh New England location. It joins Providence, Hartford, Manchester, Bangor and Portland, Maine; and Burlington, Vermont.

    Overall, Breeze flies point-to-point from 58 airports, none in Massachusetts.

    “Breeze is all about connecting cities without existing nonstop options,” C.E.O. David Neeleman said. “It’s exciting to add two more cities to our national network, and more nonstop routes to our Florida and west coast destinations, combined with an affordable, premium leisure experience.”

    Wednesday's announcement comes less than 2 months after Breeze announced a major expansion of its service in Providence, one of its original 16 airports.

    Under its agreement in Rhode Island, Breeze will offer 35 nonstop routes with at least 3 of those being international destinations.

    "The expansion of operations and service is expected to result in up to one million passengers at [T.F. Green Airport] annually and up to 400 jobs over the next ten years," according to a release from the state of Rhode Island.
