AUBURN - Auburn Fire Rescue responded to a large brush fire on a steep hill off Crowl Hill Road after receiving a 911 call from a motorist traveling on the Mass Pike at around 6 on Saturday evening, according to the post on Facebook.

Mutual aid was requested from nearby towns, including Oxford and Leicester with Forestry units, while Utility Task Vehicles were requested from Sutton, Dudley, and Spencer to assist in reaching the inaccessible fire.

Firefighters had to hike in with portable pump cans, as no large trucks could get close to the fire because of the topography and challenging conditions. The Central Mass. Law Enforcement Council and the state's Department of Fire Services Drone Units were also called to the scene to help in the operation.

The use of drones was critical in this operation, as the topography and conditions were extremely tough. The thermal imaging technology on the drones helped identify the scope of the fire and find "hot spots" for firefighters to focus on. Worcester and Leicester fire departments provided station coverage, and thankfully there were no injuries reported.

Despite the challenging conditions, the cooperation between the different departments and the use of advanced technology allowed firefighters to control the brush fire and prevent any damage to nearby properties. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
