West Boylston man retires, wins $1 million 3 days later

  • A West Boylston man got his retirement off to a great start, winning $1 million on a scratch ticket 3 days after announcing his retirement.

On July 17th, Paul Bashaw told his longtime employer that he would retire at the end of the following week. On July 20th, he bought his winning ticket at a local store with a history of selling big winners.

After finishing up without telling anyone at work about his win, the truck driver claimed his prize Friday, July 28th at Mass Lottery headquarters in Dorchester.

The winning ticket was at J&J Variety, 360 West Boylston Street, right over the Worcester-West Boylston line.

“I told my wife there were three things in life I never thought I’d see happen: the Patriots winning the Super Bowl, getting a hole in one – that happened five years ago – and hitting the Lottery, and now I’ve hit all three,” Bashaw told the Mass. State Lottery.

Bashaw won the prize on a $5,000,000 100X CASHWORD ticket, according to the Mass. State Lottery. The odds of winning $1 million dollars on that ticket are 1 in 1,008,000, according to the lottery.

Bashaw, 65, chose the cash option on his prize and got a one-time payment of $650,000 (before taxes). He plans to use some of his winnings to travel.

The $1 million winner is the second in the store's history.

In addition, less than a year ago, the store sold 6 $100,000 Mass Cash tickets on the same day and in January of 2021 it sold a $25 a year Lucky for Life winner.

The last $1 million winner sold in West Boylston was on January 13th, 2022 at Wachusett Farms, formerly Honey Farms.
