"Their love story was one that you only see in the movies"

Doreen and Roland LaPlante (Athy Memorial Home)
AUBURN — The love story of Doreen and Roland LaPlante, a couple married for an astonishing 73 years, has sadly come to an end.
Doreen, 91, passed away on Monday, April 1st, just over 2 weeks after the death of her beloved husband Roland, 96.
Roland "Pretty" LaPlante passed away at home on March 15th. His obituary paints the picture of a man who was not only deeply loved by his community for his World War II heroics and dedication to his trade as a roofer but also cherished by a family that looked up to him.
“He loved traveling with his wife and friends,” his obituary recalls, highlighting a life filled with joy and adventure shared with those closest to him.
Doreen’s passing came after a struggle with dementia, with her final weeks spent in the care of the staff at Christopher House. Her family believes it was Roland’s death that led to her peaceful passing, a sentiment captured in her obituary stating, “She truly died of a broken heart when he passed a few weeks ago.” The obituary poignantly adds, "Their love story was one that you only see in the movies,” a testament to the depth of their connection and the impact it had on those around them.
"We know that he was at the gates of Heaven to greet her," her obituary reads.
The legacy of the LaPlantes extends beyond their love story, through the lives of their 3 granddaughters and 7 great-grandchildren. Their grandchildren remember them as the epitome of true love, a real-life example that such enduring affection is not confined to the silver screen.
Roland, celebrated for his stories of military service and his life-long work ethic, was recognized as one of the oldest World War II veterans in the area. His stories, filled with humor and history, made him a beloved figure not just within his family but also across the community.
Doreen, with her remarkable grace, volunteered extensively, including at St. Vincent Hospital, where she comforted newborn babies. “She loved to travel and enjoyed yearly trips to Bermuda with her girlfriends as well as traveling with her husband and close friends,” her obituary notes, remembering her as a woman of beauty, kindness, and an infectious joy for life.
The narrative of Roland and Doreen LaPlante’s lives, filled with love, service, and community, leaves a lasting impression on all who knew them. Their story, marked by unwavering commitment to each other and their family, will continue to inspire those who remember them.
Doreen's calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4th at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster Street in Worcester. The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 5th at St. Bernard’s Church, 228 Lincoln Street in Worcester.
