SPENCER — The Thompson Pond Road bridge in Spencer has been closed indefinitely following an urgent safety inspection by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
Bridge inspectors determined the bridge is not structurally safe for vehicular traffic. Effective immediately, the bridge is closed in both directions, according to a statement from the Spencer Police Department.
The closure affects the area from Route 31 up to Westland Drive, including Nos. 32 and 39 Thompson Pond Road, and from Paxton Road up to Oak Lane, including Nos. 40 and 41 Thompson Pond Road.
This unexpected closure was prompted by findings from a recent inspection. The Spencer Police Department has urged residents to use alternative routes and to plan their travel accordingly.
"We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and cooperation," the police department posted. "Your safety is our top priority."
Residents are advised to stay tuned to the Spencer Police Department’s Facebook page for updates and further information as efforts to address and fix the issue are underway.
