AUBURN — A New York man was arrested recently in Auburn after police found him in possession of more than $6,000 in counterfeit $100 bills.
Auburn police detectives observed suspicious activity in the parking lot of the Home Depot at 779 Washington Street and approached the suspect, later identified as Carlos Ramirez, 36, of Middle Village, New York.
Upon investigation, detectives discovered the counterfeit cash on Ramirez. He was arrested and charged with possession of counterfeit notes.
Police later obtained a search warrant for Ramirez's vehicle, where they discovered additional fake bills and 17 bags of merchandise valued at over $7,000. Investigators believe the goods were purchased the previous day using counterfeit money. Auburn police are coordinating with other agencies and stores as part of the ongoing investigation into the scheme.
Ramirez was released on $500 bail.
