Woman dies in fire at Millbury encampment

  • MILLBURY — An outdoor fire that claimed the life of a woman in Millbury remains under investigation, officials announced Sunday.

At approximately 8:20 p.m. Saturday, a Mass. State Police trooper responded to a small brush fire near an encampment along the Blackstone River Bikeway, close to Route 146. The trooper discovered the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Millbury Fire Department extinguished the blaze, and Millbury Police were also notified.

Millbury Fire Chief Steven M. Kosiba, Millbury Police Chief Brian S. Lewos, State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine, and Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. released a joint statement confirming the incident.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, will undergo a formal identification procedure, with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determining her cause and manner of death.

Authorities continue to investigate the fire’s origin, noting that the state had been under a Red Flag warning, which signals high fire risk due to dry, windy conditions. Massachusetts continues to experience elevated fire dangers, prompting officials to caution against outdoor fires.

The path along the Blackstone River Bikeway remains open to the public as the investigation proceeds.
