2 hospitalized after falling through ice at Dean Park Pond

  • SHREWSBURY — 2 people were hospitalized Monday morning after falling through thin ice while skating on Dean Park Pond, according to Shrewsbury police.

Emergency crews from Shrewsbury Police, Shrewsbury Fire, and Worcester E.M.S. were sent to the scene around 7:23 a.m. after bystanders reported the incident.

Authorities said the individuals had been skating near the center of the pond when the ice gave way. They managed to skate toward the shore, where they were assisted by first responders.

Both individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately available.

Officials are reminding residents to use caution when venturing onto ice. They advise ensuring ice is at least 4 inches thick for walking or skating and avoiding areas with visible cracks or open water.

“When in doubt, stay off the ice,” Shrewsbury Police said in a statement.
