Charlton police mourn passing of Officer Richard Reddick

  • CHARLTON — The Charlton Police Department is grieving the loss of Officer Richard Reddick, a veteran law enforcement officer and dedicated public servant who died at his home on Sunday, January 12th. He was 49.

Reddick, known for his unwavering work ethic and passion for K9 handling, served in law enforcement for more than 2 decades. He began his career as an auxiliary officer in Southbridge and became a full-time officer there in 2002. In 2004, he found his calling as a narcotics K9 handler, a role that defined much of his career.

Throughout his years of service, Reddick worked with 3 K9 partners — Chase, Mika, and Pablo — forming deep bonds with each. His colleagues admired his relentless pursuit of excellence, whether apprehending suspects, seizing illegal drugs, or educating the public about K9 work.

"Rich exceeded what was expected of him in everything he did," the department said in a statement. "He was someone to look up to and emulate. No matter how many years you had on the job, Rich could show you a thing or two about how it’s done."

Beyond his professional achievements, Reddick was known for his generosity and compassion. He was described as a "gentle giant" who could strike fear in criminals while inspiring awe in children. His community engagement, especially through K9 demonstrations, left lasting impressions on many.

Reddick joined the Charlton Police Department in 2023, continuing his dedication to public safety. His colleagues remember him as a trusted partner, a good friend, and a loving family man.

He is survived by his wife, Brandi; his son, Valentine; his stepchildren; and extended family.

"He was a good friend and a good man," the department said. "We will never forget our partner, our friend, the memories we shared and the lessons we learned together."

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
