RUTLAND — A quick-thinking store clerk prevented a Rutland woman from losing $15,000 to a Bitcoin scam, authorities said.
Dhrue Patel, an employee at One Stop Beer and Wine in Holden, noticed the woman attempting to deposit the large sum into a Bitcoin ATM and immediately grew suspicious, the Rutland Police Department said in a statement.
Patel intervened and contacted police, who confirmed scammers were targeting the woman.
The department praised Patel’s actions, calling them instrumental in stopping the fraud.
Police are reminding residents to stay vigilant against financial scams and to seek a second opinion if an offer seems too good to be true.
