Auburn student faces charges after threat to "shoot up" school

  • AUBURN — A juvenile was summoned to court Friday after allegedly threatening to “shoot up” Auburn Middle School and naming 2 students as targets, police said.

The threat was reported late Thursday afternoon by the school’s principal to a School Resource Officer, according to the Auburn Police Department. The message was made via social media and surfaced after school had already been dismissed. The student in question was not attending classes at the time due to a prior incident.

Auburn Police Chief Todd Lemon was also alerted by Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Chamberland, prompting an immediate investigation.

Detectives worked with school staff and witnesses to identify the juvenile, police said. On Friday morning, a court found probable cause for 1 felony and 2 misdemeanor charges and issued a summons for the juvenile to appear in court next month. No arrest warrant was issued.

Authorities emphasized that students and staff were never in immediate danger. The department is continuing to work with school officials to ensure safety.

Chief Lemon said the safety of Auburn schools remains a top priority.

Students are encouraged to report threats anonymously through the Sandy Hook “Say Something” tip line, accessible via QR codes and school-issued iPads.
