AUBURN — A Sturbridge man has been arrested and charged in connection with an unarmed robbery at Savers Bank in Auburn following a police pursuit in Worcester, authorities said.

The robbery occurred at 12:36 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30th, when Auburn Emergency Communications received a 911 call from Savers Bank at 38 Auburn Street reporting that the bank had just been robbed. Auburn officers responded immediately and began searching the area. The department's detective bureau, K9 unit and drone unit were all deployed during the investigation.

Police said the suspect had passed a threatening note to bank staff and fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

While Auburn police were investigating, Worcester officers attempted to stop a vehicle involved in a separate crime in their city. During a brief foot pursuit, one of the suspects was seen dropping cash, according to police.

Auburn communications staff, monitoring the Worcester incident, recognized the suspect’s description and coordinated with Worcester officers. The man was arrested and later identified as John Wozniak, 49, of Sturbridge.

Wozniak was arraigned in Worcester District Court on charges of unarmed robbery and threat to commit a crime. He was held in custody following a dangerousness hearing.
