AUBURN — A suspected shoplifter who fled from the Auburn Mall was captured thanks to a citizen tip, coordinated police response, and the tracking skills of a police dog, authorities said.
Jeffrey Bates, 35, of Baldwinville, was arrested Thursday after allegedly stealing a significant amount of merchandise from Macy’s at the Auburn Mall and fleeing the scene on foot, according to the Auburn Police Department.

Officers responded to the area shortly after the report and began searching for the suspect. While canvassing the vicinity, a woman noticed a man emerge from a bush and run off—behavior she deemed suspicious. She alerted police, helping to narrow the suspect’s direction of travel.
Auburn officers, assisted by the Massachusetts State Police, established a perimeter and deployed a drone and K9 unit.
Police said K9 Biza quickly picked up the scent and tracked Bates through a waterlogged marsh and dense woods. The dog led officers to a backyard, where Bates was found hiding under an old hunting blind behind a home.

Bates was arrested without incident and transported to the Auburn Police Department for booking. He was arraigned on charges of: Shoplifting over $250, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace
His bail was set at $500.
