RUTLAND — A New Jersey man faces charges after investigators linked him to vehicle break-ins at Rutland State Park earlier this month, according to a Tuesday release from the Rutland Police Department.

Police said 2 victims reported their wallets and purses were stolen from locked vehicles on September 5th while they were visiting the park.

Soon after, banks alerted the victims to attempted purchases at a Sturbridge Walmart. One victim was able to cancel cards before funds were taken, but another suffered more than $7,000 in fraudulent transactions at stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Working with Sturbridge police, investigators obtained surveillance video of 2 suspects completing transactions at Walmart. Spencer police recovered fingerprints from a vehicles, and Worcester police forensic services matched them to Ramon Rosario of New Jersey. Booking photos from New Jersey State Police aligned with the Walmart footage, according to Rutland police.

Rosario has a lengthy criminal record and is known to use aliases, police said.

The Rutland department applied for a warrant charging Rosario with multiple offenses, including larceny under $1,200, identity fraud, improper use of a credit card, breaking and entering, conspiracy, and malicious destruction of property.

Police credited cooperation among several agencies — including Sturbridge police, Spencer police, Worcester police forensic services, New Jersey State Police and Walmart loss prevention — for identifying the suspect.
