AUBURN — 3 people face charges after police said a shoplifting incident at a TJ Maxx on one of the busiest travel days of the year led to a traffic-snarled getaway attempt in a stolen car.

Auburn police said the store’s asset protection staff reported at about 1:27 p.m. Wednesday that a shoplifter left the store and climbed into a red Chevy sedan with Massachusetts plates before heading onto Route 12. Holiday congestion on the roadway helped officers catch up quickly, police said.

Detective Sgt. Daniel Lamoreaux and Officer Alex Ortiz-Torres stopped the vehicle on Southbridge Street. Dispatchers then learned the car itself had been reported stolen, according to police.

3 occupants were arrested, and officers recovered 11 stolen items valued at nearly $300, police said. The merchandise was returned to TJ Maxx, and the vehicle will be returned to its owner.

Police identified those arrested as Robbin Wilson, 34, of Marlborough; Anthony Williams, 42, of Leicester; and Michael St. Jean, 42, of Worcester. All are charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle. Additional charges include operating with a suspended license, receiving stolen property under $1,200, and two outstanding warrants in St. Jean’s case, police said.
