STERLING — An early morning shed fire in a densely packed Central Avenue neighborhood was quickly brought under control Monday, drawing a multi-department response and mutual aid from surrounding communities, officials said.

Sterling firefighters were dispatched at about 2:15 a.m. after a report of a shed fire. Crews arrived to find a 20-by-20-foot, 2-story outbuilding with heavy fire showing and several nearby homes exposed to the flames.

A working fire was declared, prompting mutual aid from the Leominster, Clinton and West Boylston fire departments. The Lancaster and Holden fire departments provided station coverage while Sterling crews remained on scene.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it spread to neighboring structures. No civilians or firefighters were injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the District 8 Fire Investigation Team. Officials said the fire is not considered suspicious at this time.
