MILLBURY — Millbury police arrested a Worcester man after they said he targeted an elderly resident in a “flim flam” scam.
Police said an elderly man contacted officers after giving a ride to a person who claimed he needed gas money. During the encounter, police said, the suspect repeatedly directed the victim from one gas station to another before having him drive to a nearby restaurant.
At the restaurant, the suspect asked the victim for change and used a distraction technique commonly known as a “flim flam” scam, taking the victim’s money without his knowledge, police said.
Following an investigation by Millbury police day shift officers, the suspect was identified as William Price, 65, of Worcester. Officers later found Price operating a vehicle on Memorial Drive in Millbury.
Police said Tuesday Price was arrested after a traffic stop. Officers recovered the victim’s money, which was returned to him.
The Millbury Police Department reminded residents to be cautious when approached by strangers asking for money, rides or assistance, saying scammers often rely on distraction techniques and the kindness of others.
