PAXTON — A Paxton Fire Department vehicle responding to an emergency call was involved in a crash Thursday morning near Paxton Center School, leaving a firefighter with minor injuries and temporarily disrupting traffic and school pickup procedures.
The crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday, November 5th, as the fire department vehicle was responding to an emergency on West Street, according to a news release from Fire Chief Michael Pingitore.
The firefighter operating the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation under department policy. No other injuries were reported.
Both vehicles involved in the crash were damaged and had to be towed from the scene, officials said.
The crash caused temporary traffic disruptions near Paxton Center School, which modified its parent drop-off procedures while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene. Other school operations were not affected.
The original emergency call was handled without interruption by other on-duty firefighters, the department said.
Paxton police are investigating the crash. The Fire Department also plans an internal review to evaluate the incident and identify potential improvements to emergency responder safety.
According to the department, the damaged vehicle was used for emergency responses, administrative duties, inspections and fire prevention activities. Its loss has not affected the department's ability to provide services.
Town officials are working with their insurance carrier to assess the damage and determine whether the vehicle should be repaired or replaced.
