Millbury Fire thanks civilian heroes of Sunday's 3-decker fire

  • A second-grader who saw smoke from a fire in Millbury on Sunday was among three civilian heroes the Millbury Fire Department thanked in a Facebook post early Monday.

The child saw smoke coming from the Water Street three-decker as he was leaving church on Sunday and told his mother, the fire department wrote, and she called 911.

"We want to publicly recognize and thank some individuals from yesterday's fire on Water Street," the post begins.

"First Jason Jumper, shown in the picture on the top speaking with the Chief. Jason went in the burning building and helped the residents get out. Not only did he help them to safety, he also closed the doors inside the apartment which dramatically slowed the interior progress of the fire, and protected the cat (Dexter) until firefighters could rescue him. He was previously a firefighter in PA and his instincts are still with him.

"We also want to thank Dylan Jumper, a 2nd grade student," the post continues. "He saw the smoke as they were leaving church and alerted his mom Jennifer, who called 911, thanks to her also.

"Also a huge thanks to Dave Delaney(in the bottom picture) who went in to assure the residents got out. He has helped our community in so many ways, and this is one more. We can't thank all of them for their assistance, that's one reason the fire was not as tragic as it could have been."
