Sean Rose, Worcester District 1 City Councilor (Facebook)
Calling his time in office "extraordinary," Sean Rose will not seek another term as Worcester's District 1 City Councilor.
The 3-term councilor made the announcement on social media shortly after midnight Wednesday.
The timing of the announcement was made "to afford any potential candidates for this seat ample opportunity to launch their campaigns," he posted on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
"After over five years serving District 1 and the City of Worcester, I've decided not to run for another term when this term is up," he wrote on city letterhead. "My time in politics has been extraordinary. I was motivated when I first ran in 2017 to improve the district and the city for my daughters in hopes that they'd come back to our community to live, work and raise their children as their Mom did. I've done that.
"I also wanted to be a role model for young people who grew up facing adversity, motivating them to break barriers of conditioning and poverty. I'm hopeful that I've achieved that. I look forward to spending more time with my family while continuing my philanthropic efforts throughout the community, personally and professionally.
"I've made many friends, accomplished most of the goals I set,and made many memories, all of which I will cherish forever. Worcester won't have seen the last of me come 12/31/23. You'll see me through a different lens. Thank you to my family for allowing me to serve and for all my supporters over the years, especially in my last race.
"I am forever indebted to you."
Rose won his first race in 2017, replacing Tony Economou. Rose topped a 4-person field in the Preliminary Election and then beat Edward Moynihan by 184 votes, 2,576-2,392 in the General Election.
Rose was unopposed in 2019, but won a hard-fought race in 2021. Rose finished second to Richard Cipro in the Preliminary Election, but won the General Election against Cipro by 409 votes, 3,408-2,999.
