HOLDEN — The Town of Holden has opened a cooling center to help residents cope with excessive heat and humidity through Friday, according to the Holden Fire Department.

The cooling center is located at the Holden Senior Center, 1130 Main St., and is open to all residents. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, and 1 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Fire officials encouraged residents to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if they do not feel thirsty, and to avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages. They also advised spending as much time as possible in air-conditioned spaces, limiting outdoor activity, taking breaks in the shade and wearing light-colored, breathable clothing.

Officials reminded the public never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, where temperatures can quickly become life-threatening. Residents are also encouraged to check on elderly neighbors, young children and anyone with chronic health conditions or without access to air conditioning.

The department urged residents to recognize the signs of heat-related illness. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, pale or clammy skin, nausea, vomiting and fainting.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency and may include a body temperature of 103 degrees or higher, hot, red, dry or damp skin, a rapid pulse, confusion or unconsciousness. Anyone who suspects someone is suffering from heat stroke should call 911 immediately, officials said.
