Museum of Worcester taps arts leader with deep local roots

  • WORCESTER — The Museum of Worcester has appointed Eric A. Butler as its next executive director, the organization announced, with his tenure beginning January 5th.

Butler, a Worcester native with more than 2 decades of experience in nonprofit leadership, arts administration and fundraising, returns to an institution he first explored as a child. He said early visits to city landmarks and school research projects helped shape his appreciation for Worcester’s cultural history.

“Those early experiences taught me that history is most meaningful when it’s immediate, relevant, and tangible,” Butler said in a statement. “The Museum of Worcester embodies that truth, and I am honored to be in a role that will help shape its next chapter.”

Butler praised outgoing executive director Bill Wallace and his “vision, leadership, and unparalleled knowledge of Worcester’s history.” Wallace is credited with significant growth and impact during his tenure.

Most recently, Butler served as vice president of development at City Year headquarters, where he managed a team that raised more than $25 million annually to support national programs. He previously held fundraising and leadership roles at edX, Saint John’s High School, and other organizations, securing major contributions and helping launch arts and education initiatives.

In Worcester, Butler has been an active supporter of local arts groups. He is former chair of the Worcester Cultural Coalition, current president of the Worcester County Light Opera Company, and founder of Broadway in Worcester, which has provided free arts education to local students.

Diane Giampa, board chair of the Museum of Worcester, said the organization is eager to begin “an exciting new era” under Butler’s leadership. “With Eric Butler, the Museum of Worcester begins an exciting new era, and we know he will leverage his love of history, deep connections in the community, and track record of philanthropic success,” Giampa said.

Butler holds an MBA from Boston College and bachelor’s degrees in psychology and theatre from the College of the Holy Cross.
