A restaurant in Worcester's Canal District on Tuesday announced its closing, becoming the third high profile business in the district to announce it's ceasing operation.

District Wood Fired Kitchen announced the move on social media shortly after noon on Tuesday.

"With a heavy heart, we unfortunately have closed District Wood Fired Kitchen," the post reads. "We want to thank our valued employees, patrons, and the community. We will explore new concepts and hope to reopen this location in 2024."

District Wood Fired Kitchen opened in 2022 in the former Compass Tavern

The restaurant is the third high profile business to close in January.

Popular restaurant Lock 50, which was sold in October, closed abruptly on January 2nd, leading to the consternation of workers who were given no notice of the closing, according to an article in The Worcester Guardian.

And last Friday, the market Maker to Main, which reopened in the Canal District in September after moving from Main Street, announced it was closing.

“After 12 years of grassroots efforts hauling local food, numerous awards, endless business pivots and millions of dollars to local farmers, brewers + makers I can no longer afford to continue,” owner Lynn Cheney wrote in a social media post.

District Wood Fired Kitchen said that gift cards can be redeemed at Off The Rails at 90 Commercial Street in Worcester.
