RUTLAND — An Amazon delivery driver's quick action and keen observation skills were critical in helping police track down a suspect involved in a hit-and-run incident in April.
Lesleigh Nydam, the driver from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, was delivering packages when she witnessed a person being struck by a vehicle.
The suspect fled, but Nydam didn't hesitate. She chased the suspect's vehicle on foot, managing to note and report the make, model, direction of travel, and a partial license plate number to the police.
Her timely and brave actions enabled law enforcement to locate the vehicle involved in the crime. Lesleigh "demonstrated extraordinary courage and quick thinking when faced with a dangerous situation," wrote Lieutenant Daniel Collinge of the Rutland Police Department. Her "bravery and composure under pressure undoubtedly played a pivotal role in the eventual apprehension of the suspect."
Nydam received a letter of commendation from the police department, recognizing her selfless act and the positive impact of her actions on the community. "It is individuals like you who embody the highest standards of citizenship and community service," the commendation reads.
Amazon has also been notified of Nydam's heroic efforts. "Your unwavering commitment to the well-being of others serves as an inspiration to us all," Collinge added in his letter to Nydam.
Nydam's quick response not only led to the apprehension of a suspect but also highlighted the role civilians can play in ensuring community safety.
