Conversion of Worcester church to apartments takes next step

    Plans to rehab and convert a historic Downtown Worcester church into housing are moving forward, according to documents submitted to the City of Worcester.

    The project to turn the former Mission Church at 205 Summer Street in Worcester into housing first appeared in 2019. Fresh Turf, an affiliate of the Traggorth Companies, applied for and received tax relief for the project.

    Now the project developer is applying to the city of Worcester’s Planning Board for approval of its Definitive Site Plan application.

    “We are excited to transform this long-vacant site and restore it to its landmark status at this important corner of the city,” the company wrote in its application.

    As part of the application for tax relief, the developer wrote that its plans for the seven apartments in the former church. 

    In its application to the city, it says, "The residential component will include up to seven market rate units which would be comprised of four 1 bedroom units ranging in size from 540 – 625 square feet, and two 2 bedroom units at 990 square feet and 1300 square feet. The former chapel space is envisioned as an open concept, 2450 square foot apartment with a mezzanine sleeping loft."

    The application continues, "We expect rents to range from $1,650 to $3,900 per month."

    The Planning Board’s next meeting is scheduled for October 20th.
