Worcester police arrested 19-year-old Sahfari Williams on New Year's morning, charging him with carjacking.
Police say they were called to 68 Stafford Street about 10:20 a.m. for a report that a man was approaching motorists and aggressively asking for rides.
As officers were en route, officers were told a man tried to stab a driver and steal a vehicle. Witnesses said the man approached people in the parking lot, showed a knife and demanded keys. Witnesses also said the man ran toward Lakewood Street.
Police saw a man fitting the witnesses description running through backyards.
Officers tracked down the suspect, who ran when he saw police.
Williams, who police said had a knife, was identified by witnesses and placed under arrest. He is charged with carjacking, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. He will be arraigned in court.
