  West Boylston – On Tuesday, January 3^rd, 2023, Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis was sworn in for his third six-year term as Sheriff by Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito. The ceremony took place in the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction’s Chapel before an audience of WCSO Deputy Sheriffs and facility staff.

  In her final days in office, the Lt. Governor delivered brief remarks during the ceremony.

  “You here in Worcester County have redefined the description of what corrections is all about and your interactions with the community are extraordinary,” the Lieutenant Governor commented. “Thank you to Sheriff Lew for being an outstanding leader, for caring so much about those he serves, and for putting together this team of people to help accomplish the goals that I know that he is setting for the third time as the Sheriff of Worcester County.”

  Immediately following Evangelidis’ oath, the Sheriff’s first act was to deputize the department employees who are approved to execute the powers of a Deputy Sheriff.

  During the ceremony, Evangelidis explained, “This is my first official act as Sheriff each year to swear in the fine men and women who are serving the department and are deputized employees. This is one of the most humbling honors that I’ve been given as Sheriff, the ability to give you the authority to execute the necessary duties of the Sheriff’s Office.”

  After deputizing his staff, the sheriff concluded the ceremony, “Thank you to the Lieutenant Governor for being with us today. It is a memorable point in my career to share this moment with all of you and the Lieutenant Governor. It is a tremendous honor to serve as the Sheriff of Worcester County and I am grateful to have the confidence of the voters in Worcester County. Together, our department has accomplished a great deal in the way of inmate rehabilitation and direct community involvement. I look forward to building upon the strong foundation we have set over the past decade and continuing to serve as a benchmark for corrections across the nation.”

  Sheriff Evangelidis was elected Worcester County Sheriff on November 2, 2010, after serving in the state legislature for eight years. Since taking the oath of office in January 2011, Sheriff Evangelidis has remained committed to running the Sheriff’s Department based on the mission of professionalism and public safety.

  As Worcester County Sheriff, Evangelidis has increased the hiring standards to the highest in the field of corrections in the Commonwealth. Evangelidis is also currently the only Sheriff in Massachusetts that does not accept political contributions from employees or their spouses. A policy that has promoted a more professional department and better working environment for all Worcester County Sheriff’s Office employees. In addition, Evangelidis has overseen the advancement and construction of the most comprehensive mental health and substance use disorder treatment building located at a correctional facility in the Commonwealth.
