Worcester couple out for a walk finds man in their car

  • WORCESTER — A pre-dawn dog walk led a Worcester couple to a car break-in in progress Sunday, setting off a brief physical altercation and a rapid response from the Worcester Police Department that ended in the arrest of a Dorchester man.

At around 2:45 a.m., on June 26th, Worcester officers responded to a reported car break on South Buffum Street. According to the victims, they discovered a man inside their car when they woke up to walk their dogs.

The victims confronted the man, sparking a short-lived physical confrontation before the intruder fled. The couple told police that various items, including credit cards, had been stolen from the car.

Following a detailed description of the suspect from the victims, police promptly issued a "be on the lookout" (BOLO) alert.

Just a short while after later, another officer identified a man matching the description on Mill Street. The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Michael Lawler of Dorchester, was detained.

After a brief investigation, officers developed probable cause to charge Lawler with breaking & entering a car at night to commit a Felony. Further complicating Lawler's legal situation, he had an active arrest warrant for a separate incident.
