WORCESTER — A 2-alarm fire at a multi-family home at 3 Hancock St. late Tuesday night claimed the lives of 2 residents, according to the city of Worcester.
The fire department responded to the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m. with reports of people trapped inside. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames on the first floor of the building and began immediate extinguishment and rescue efforts.
Assistant Fire Chief Adam Roche told NewsTalk New England that during a primary search of the residence, firefighters located 2 individuals on the first floor. Both were removed from the home and transported to a local hospital by Worcester EMS, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
2 firefighters were also transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The fire escalated to a second alarm and is currently under investigation. The blaze displaced 2 adults and 3 children.
The Worcester Fire Department is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
