BOSTON — A Worcester man who operated a roofing business under an alias has agreed to plead guilty to evading taxes on $1.6 million in income, federal authorities said Thursday.
Jake Miller, 42, owner of Kostas Roofing, faces a single count of tax evasion after allegedly concealing earnings from the Internal Revenue Service between 2013 and 2021. A plea hearing has not yet been scheduled.
According to court documents, Miller conducted business under the name “Paul Kostas” and deposited customer payments directly into his personal bank accounts. Prosecutors allege that despite earning at least $1.6 million during the eight-year period, Miller failed to file income tax returns and avoided paying approximately $450,000 in federal taxes.
The charge of tax evasion carries a potential sentence of up to 5 years in prison, 3 years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the financial gain or loss resulting from the offense. Sentencing decisions are subject to federal guidelines and judicial discretion.
