WORCESTER — A 30-year-old Worcester man was arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly robbing a Main Street convenience store at knifepoint and assaulting a police officer during his apprehension, according to the Worcester Police Department.
Officers were dispatched around 3:25 a.m. to the 7-Eleven at 1326 Main St. for a report of an armed robbery in progress. Police said a man had entered the store, took items without paying, brandished a knife at the clerk, and stole money before fleeing the scene.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and began searching the area for a suspect. Shortly afterward, officers encountered a man on Main Street who matched the description and appeared to be the same person seen in the video.
Police identified the suspect as Charles Yawn, 30, of William Street. During a pat frisk, Yawn allegedly struck one of the officers in the face with his knee. Officers took him to the ground and placed him under arrest.
A pair of scissors was recovered from Yawn, police said. He was charged with armed robbery, assault and battery on a police officer, and also had an outstanding arrest warrant.
No serious injuries were reported.
