Sawed-off shotgun, crack seized in Main South arrests

  • WORCESTER — Worcester police arrested 2 men Friday night in Worcester’s Main South neighborhood after police recovered a sawed-off shotgun and crack cocaine, authorities said.

According to the Worcester Police Department, a lieutenant with the Neighborhood Response Team was monitoring surveillance footage around 9 on Friday night when he spotted a man who appeared to be carrying a sawed-off shotgun and yelling at another group near Main and King streets.

The lieutenant alerted patrol officers, who attempted to stop the man. As they approached, another man fled the area and threw an item into a nearby driveway, police said. Officers caught the man and recovered a sock containing 26 bags of what appeared to be crack cocaine.

That suspect, identified as Devonte James, 24, of Claremont Street, was arrested and charged with possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute.

While officers were processing James, another man approached the group. The lieutenant arrived at the scene and identified the man as Martineau Lucien, 32, of Hammond Street — the individual seen earlier carrying the weapon.

Lucien was detained, and police later located a sawed-off shotgun behind a Main Street building. Authorities said Lucien did not have a license to carry firearms.

He was arrested and faces multiple charges, including: Possession of a sawed-off shotgun; carrying a loaded gun in public without a license; carrying a gun without a license; possession of ammunition without an F.I.D. card; and carrying a shotgun on a public way.

Police noted that sawed-off shotguns are illegal in Massachusetts.
