WORCESTER — A sanitary sewer overflow on Friday resulted in the release of approximately 470 gallons of untreated wastewater near Lake Quinsigamond, prompting a water quality advisory.
City officials said the discharge occurred at 11:07 a.m. in the area of 65 Lake Avenue. The leak, originating from an underground pipe, was contained by public works crews at 12:41 p.m.
Some of the overflow entered the storm sewer system, which drains into Lake Quinsigamond. The city is advising the public of the potential for elevated E. Coli bacteria levels in and around the discharge area.
Daily water testing will be conducted until results return to acceptable public health standards, according to the city. The sewer system is currently operating normally.
