Kia, Hyundai thefts rising in Worcester, police say

  • WORCESTER — Worcester police are warning residents about a string of vehicle thefts targeting certain Hyundai and Kia models, citing a security flaw that makes them vulnerable.

Police said that since July there have been 10 reported thefts in the city — 8 involving Kia vehicles and 2 involving Hyundais. While some of the attempts were unsuccessful, many vehicles were left with significant damage.

Investigators said thieves typically gain access by entering unlocked vehicles or breaking windows. Once inside, they tamper with the steering column and ignition system to try to start the car.

Although the incidents were initially spread across Worcester, police noted a recent cluster near Main and Elm streets.

Many of the thefts are believed to have occurred overnight or in the early morning hours.

The department is urging owners to take precautions, including checking with dealerships for software updates or retrofit kits, using steering wheel locks, parking in well-lit areas, and installing kill switches, battery disconnects, or GPS trackers.

Residents are also asked to report any suspicious activity to Worcester police.
