Grand jury indicts man in 2009 Patricia Santos cold case murder

  • WORCESTER — A Worcester County grand jury has indicted a Mississippi man on a murder charge in the 2009 disappearance of 36-year-old Patricia Santos, who was last seen in Worcester more than 16 years ago, District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. announced.

Albert Carabba, 64, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was indicted on 1 count of murder tied to the disappearance and death of his ex-girlfriend. Santos was reported missing from 45 Fruit Street on May 20, 2009.

Carabba was taken into custody without incident in Ocean Springs after the indictment. Authorities said he is expected to be brought to Massachusetts for arraignment in Worcester Superior Court at a later date.

Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier credited investigators’ “steadfast, patient determination” and said the case moving forward could help bring closure to Santos’ family. The DA’s office said the charge stems from a joint effort with Worcester police to review and close open homicide cases.

Santos, a Worcester resident, had been in recovery for 2 years and was working at a women’s recovery program when she vanished, according to Unsolved Worcester. Coworkers reported her missing after she failed to show up for 2 days.

Days after she was last seen, Carabba was arrested after allegedly trying to flee from police in Santos’ Ford Mustang, according to a 2009 story in the Telegram & Gazette.
