WORCESTER — There’s a new “Sheruff” in town.
The Worcester Police Department recently introduced Sheruff Barkley, its new comfort dog. The Bernedoodle will help officers connect with the community and provide emotional support during visits and events.
The department turned to Worcester Public Schools’ third graders to come up with a name for the pup. After receiving suggestions from classrooms across the city, police asked residents to vote for their favorite on social media.
The winning name — Sheruff Barkley — came from a third-grade class at Tatnuck Magnet School. Officers and school officials recently visited the class to announce their victory, drawing cheers from the students.
Police said Sheruff Barkley will soon make an official visit to Tatnuck Magnet School to meet the students who named him.
A video introducing Sheruff Barkley is available on the Worcester Police Department’s Facebook page.
