WORCESTER — The Mass. Department of Transportation began Phase 1 demolition Tuesday night on the Harrison Street bridge over I-290, launching the first major step in a months-long replacement project, city officials announced.
Nightly demolition work is scheduled through December 22nd from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., typically running Sunday through Thursday and dependent on weather conditions.
During these hours, traffic over the Harrison Street Bridge will be closed, with eastbound access restored during daytime. MassDOT said drivers should also expect partial and rolling lane closures on I-290 beneath the bridge.
A more intensive closure is planned after January 1st, when existing bridge beams are removed over 2 nights. Harrison Street will shut down for roughly 36 continuous hours, beginning around 6 p.m. and ending around 7 a.m. after the second night of work. Police details will be on site, and pedestrian access will remain available except during beam-lifting operations.
In the second week of January, crews will begin partial demolition of the bridge’s abutments and pier. That work will also occur nightly from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. over about 10 nights.
MassDOT’s goal is to complete all Phase 1 demolition by the end of January. Residents with questions or concerns may contact the agency at dot.feedbackdistrict3@dot.state.ma.us.
