Security, parking plans for World Cup games on Worcester Common

  • Several downtown Worcester streets will be temporarily closed and enhanced security measures will be in place during the city's upcoming "Game On Worcester" World Cup watch parties on Worcester Common, city officials announced Wednesday.

The city said Franklin Street, Front Street, Commercial Street, Portland Street, Church Street, Mechanic Street and Norwich Street will be closed to vehicle traffic beginning 1 to 2 hours before each event. For the first watch party, scheduled for Saturday, road closures will begin at 3 p.m. Officials said closure times for the remaining 3 events will be announced ahead of each game.

Roads are expected to reopen approximately 30 to 45 minutes after each event concludes. Motorists are being urged to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time when visiting downtown during the broadcasts.

To accommodate attendees, the city is directing drivers to several nearby parking facilities, including the Federal Plaza Garage at 570 Main St., Pearl Elm Garage at 20 Pearl St., Mercantile Center Garage at 201 Commercial St., Worcester Common Garage at 3 Eaton Place and the McGrath/Worcester Public Library Garage at 40 Salem St.

City officials also outlined security procedures for the events. Attendees should expect that bags may be searched before entering the designated viewing area. Alcoholic beverages must be purchased on-site and consumed within approved event boundaries.

With warm summer weather possible during the outdoor gatherings, officials encouraged visitors to take precautions against heat and humidity. Information on staying safe during hot weather is available through state and municipal resources.

The 4 "Game On Worcester" events will feature live broadcasts of World Cup matches on Worcester Common. The city said any additional security advisories, weather-related updates or schedule changes will be posted on its website and social media channels.
