Water use restrictions set for Coes Reservoir Thursday

  • WORCESTER — The City of Worcester will treat a portion of Coes Reservoir on Thursday to combat the spread of an invasive aquatic plant, prompting temporary water use and recreation restrictions in the area.

The city's Department of Sustainability and Resilience has hired contractors to apply the herbicide ProcellaCOR, also known as florpyrauxifen-benzyl, to the northern section of Coes Reservoir on June 25th.

City officials are advising residents to stop using water from the reservoir for irrigating plants and lawns or watering livestock. On the day of the treatment, people are also being asked to stay out of the water, avoid boating and keep pets away from the treated area north of the Knights of Columbus property.

Recreational activities, including boating and swimming, will remain permitted in the southern section of the reservoir, according to the city.

Access points around the lake will be posted before the treatment begins. Water use restrictions are expected to be lifted the following day.

Officials said the herbicide application is intended to control Eurasian milfoil, an invasive aquatic plant that can spread rapidly and interfere with recreation and ecosystem health.

The city said herbicide treatments are a commonly used and effective method for reducing invasive weed growth and pose no risk to humans or animals after the application is complete, although irrigation use of reservoir water is discouraged during the treatment period.

The Worcester Conservation Commission approved the treatment.
