Worcester detectives nab murder suspect in Florida

  • A 23-year-old man has been arrested in Florida and charged in the 2022 killing of 17-year-old Jazmin Rosario after Worcester police detectives traveled south to assist with the operation, city officials announced Thursday.

According to the Worcester Police Department, Detective Sgt. William Pero and Detective Jay Magarian of the department's Unresolved Homicide Unit traveled to Tampa on July 1st as part of the investigation into Rosario's death.

Police said the detectives, working with the Worcester County District Attorney's Office, developed probable cause to charge Jayden Montes with murder in the fatal shooting of Rosario, who was killed just days before her 18th birthday in 2022. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued.

Authorities said members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Central Florida/Caribbean Task Force located and arrested Montes without incident shortly after 6 a.m. The task force included officers from the Tampa Police Department, St. Petersburg Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

"While this arrest can't undo the pain of Jazmin's loss for her loved ones, it is an important step toward justice," Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier said in a statement. "The Worcester Police Department's Unresolved Homicide Unit and every Worcester Police Officer will continue to work tirelessly each day to hold those responsible accountable."
