The City of Worcester will apply a preventative algae treatment to Coes Reservoir and Indian Lake on Monday, July 6th, with temporary restrictions on water activities and use during the application.

The city's Department of Sustainability and Resilience said contractors will apply the algaecide copper sulfate to both bodies of water. Officials emphasized there is currently no threat of harmful algae exposure and said the treatment is intended to prevent the growth of toxin-producing algae.

On Monday, residents are advised to stay out of the water, stop boating and fishing, and keep pets away from the lakes. The city is also asking people not to use water from Coes Reservoir or Indian Lake to irrigate plants or lawns or to water livestock. Beaches will be posted before the treatment begins.

Water use restrictions are expected to be lifted on Tuesday.

According to the city, copper sulfate is a safe and effective method of controlling harmful algae growth and poses minimal risk to people and animals once the application is complete. The Worcester Conservation Commission approved the treatment.

More information about toxin-producing algae, also known as cyanobacteria, is available through the city's "Blue Space Minute" educational video series on YouTube.
