Coes Reservoir reopens for weekend, treatment planned Monday

    WORCESTER — Coes Reservoir has reopened to the public after water testing confirmed cyanobacteria levels have fallen below state recreational thresholds, though the reservoir will temporarily close again Monday for a preventative treatment.

    The reservoir has been closed since July 22nd after cyanobacteria density testing exceeded the state's recreational safety threshold. Since then, cell densities have declined, and current test results indicate there is no threat to public health.

    Residents can use the reservoir this weekend, but the city said it will close again Monday while contractors perform a preventative treatment to help manage cyanobacteria.

    During Monday's treatment, the city is advising residents to stay out of the water, suspend boating and fishing, and keep pets away from the reservoir. Water use restrictions are expected to be lifted the following day.

    Cyanobacteria, sometimes called blue-green algae, occur naturally in lakes and ponds but can become harmful when concentrations reach high levels. Worcester said it maintains an active cyanobacteria monitoring and management program to help keep local waterways safe for recreation and wildlife.
