Police recover $18K gold necklace after robbery at Auburn Mall

    AUBURN — A Worcester man is being held after police say he stole an $18,000 gold necklace from Hannoush Jewelers at the Auburn Mall, struck an employee while fleeing and then threatened a taxi driver who unknowingly drove him from the scene.

    Todd McCabe, 51, of Worcester, was arrested within minutes of the robbery on Monday, September 14th, and officers recovered the stolen necklace, according to the Auburn Police Department.

    Police received a 911 call from a store employee shortly before 3:30. The employee reported that a white man had stolen an $18,000 gold necklace and elbowed a female employee in the face while fleeing.

    The Auburn Police Department's dispatch log identifies the jewelry store as Hannoush Jewelers.

    Police said the store manager chased the suspect and saw him get into a Yellow Taxi that then left the mall property. The manager was able to provide police with a partial license plate number.

    Officers and Auburn Fire Rescue paramedics responded to the mall while other officers searched for the taxi. The employee who was struck suffered minor injuries, police said.

    Within 5 minutes, Sgt. Spiros Kaperonis spotted the taxi on Auburn Street near Highland Street. Police stopped the vehicle and arrested McCabe, who was riding in the rear seat, without incident. Officers also recovered the necklace.

    Detectives interviewed the taxi driver and determined he had no knowledge of the alleged robbery and was not involved, according to police.

    The driver told investigators he became concerned after seeing the store manager chasing McCabe from the mall. When the driver questioned McCabe about what had happened, McCabe claimed to have a gun, prompting the driver to continue driving, police said.

    McCabe was charged with unarmed robbery, assault and battery, and assault with a dangerous weapon. The department's dispatch log also lists those charges and identifies McCabe as a Worcester resident.

    McCabe was arraigned in Worcester District Court and was ordered held following a dangerousness hearing, police said.

    The Auburn Police Department credited the store manager's quick response and detailed information, along with assistance from Auburn Mall management and security, with helping officers locate the suspect and recover the necklace.
