New Downtown Worcester apartment project gets underway

  • Owner creating 8 new apartments, rehabbing ground floor retail space

Spring is in the air and the battle against COVID-19 is beginning to turn for the better. There are hopeful signs of an economy poised for a rebound.

One of those signs is on Main Street in Worcester, where owners of the building at 517 Main St. have begun work rehabbing the building.

According to a building permit issued on March 9, the former Metro PCS building will become 8 new apartments, while the ground-floor retail space will be rehabbed.

The project has begun with what appears to be interior demolition and the removal of windows on the top 4 floors.

The historic Cheney-Ballard Building was constructed around 1870.

The Telegram and Gazette reported in September that the apartments would all be one-bedroom units.

The building is owned by Joseph E. Donovan, who is also vice president of MG2 LLC. MG2 owns 507 Main St. as well as much of the property that comprises the Grid District.

According to an article in the Telegram & Gazette, “Five Seventeen Main LLC purchased 517 Main St., the former Metro PCS building, for $450,000. The purchase was recorded March 1 at the Registry of Deeds. The five-story building was assessed at $210,500.”
