The next step in the redevelopment of the former Boys Club at Lincoln Square in Worcester will be announced as early as this week, according to Worcester City Manager Ed Augustus.

While the plans are not yet public, Augustus hinted that the property will be developed into housing.

In his weekly Tuesday interview on Radio Worcester’s “Talk of the Commonwealth” show, Augustus said, “The city has a desperate need for housing.”

“We need more housing in Worcester, and the market is responding to that demand,” he said in the clip, which begins at the 12:48 mark. “We’ll be making an announcement, probably later this week, about the Boys Club in Lincoln Square. There’s a lot of interest in housing in Worcester.”

The city of Worcester sold the building, which is at 16 Salisbury St., in May 2019 for $300,000 to WinnCompanies, a major developer whose Worcester properties include the neighboring Voke Lofts and the 180-unit Wellington Community in Main South.

According to a 2019 MassLive article, a deal to convert the Boys Club into a school for autistic children fell through. “The 104-year-old building, which has been vacant since 2007, needs about $13 million of work to make it tenantable,” the article reported. “That includes a new roof and windows, ADA improvements including elevators, new electrical, heating and ventilation systems, and other code requirements.”
